Tips from an Engagement Photographer Who Pulls It Off Every Time

So you’re planning a Glacier National Park proposal?! You’ve got great taste. If you’ve been furiously Googling ideas for how to pull it off…slow down and take a breath! This is going to be epic. Proposing in a national park takes a bit more planning than whipping out a ring at dinner, but it’s definitely worth the work.

As someone who has helped plenty of people pop the question and documented the entire thing, I’ve got just the tips, recommendations, and proposal ideas you’re looking for.  Using Drew and Samantha’s proposal as an example, I’ll walk you through what to think about, where to go, and how to make it feel like you (without spoiling the surprise).

Why You Need an Engagement Photographer for Your Surprise Proposal

Okay, so you don’t “need” to do anything to make your proposal the best day ever. BUT, as a local and a photographer, I highly recommend bringing in the experts to help you plan your surprise.

Here’s why:

I know the ins and outs of the park.

No exaggeration, I know every overlook, every big mountain view, and yes, even every bush to hide in. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with planning, whether that’s picking where to propose in Glacier or the logistics of making it all happen, or what time of day is best for photos, I’ve got a million tips and ideas to share based on your vision.

You get your surprise proposal documented and an engagement photoshoot all in one go.

Most people only get iPhone photos right after the moment. With a photographer, you get the entire story: the lead-up, the reaction, and a full set of engagement portraits. You’ll have sneak peeks to send to your friends and family before the word even gets out!

How to Keep Your Proposal A Surprise

Drew absolutely nailed this part.

He and Samantha traveled to Montana for a friend’s destination wedding. He reached out to me first to help plan the whole thing and then co-conspired with her dad to work out the details.

They spent the entire week hiking every chance they had, including a real thigh-burner hike on the Apgar Lookout Trail, where Sam fully expected the proposal at the very top. When it didn’t happen, she was SO bummed she joked that she “moped the whole way down.”

Which made the real proposal even sweeter when he finally popped the question at Lake McDonald on the way back to their "reservation” that evening.

Here are the tricks that made it work (and can make yours seamless too):

1. Create a believable reason to get dressed up.

Samantha thought they had reservations for after their hike that day, so she brought along a cute outfit to switch into. The perfect cover.

2. Use a friend or parent as the planner

Drew aligned with Samantha’s dad on all of their plans, making the fake reservations and plans for later not so suspicious. They can also help get things back on track if your partner insists on diverting from the plan!

3. Choose a “photo stop” as your excuse

Proposing at the lookout point on the hike would have been the obvious choice, but Drew instead suggested they “swing by Lake McDonald for a quick picture,”  which made sense because it’s stunning!

4. Try not to worry, stress, or freak out (I know, it’s hard)

Once you’ve done all the planning, your only job is to enjoy the moment! The more present you are, the less your partner will suspect. Don’t worry about everything being “perfect!” I promise you everything will be great, and honestly? The little quirks and oops moments make it even better.

Then be ready to celebrate! For Samantha and Drew, we spent the next hour bopping around Lake McDonald, capturing engagement photos, and listening to Samantha gush about how she was in disbelief over the whole thing!

Ideas for Your Own Surprise Glacier National Park Proposal

Proposing in Glacier means having endless ways to personalize the entire trip without overcomplicating it. First, think about you as a couple: things you love to do together, your pace on vacation, what you’ve been looking forward to doing in Montana!

Then it’s time to get to planning! Whether you want a sweet, quiet moment or a big, camera-ready, pop the champagne proposal is more your speed, it’s all possible in the park.

Where to Propose in Glacier National Park

I won’t lie to you, I do keep specific hidden gem locations under wraps for a reason! With Glacier National Park attracting nearly 3 million visitors each year, protecting small, less-traveled areas is part of following Leave No Trace principles and helps preserve the park!

With that in mind, I’m happy to share some of my most recommended general areas of the park with you, so that you can start narrowing down which proposal location is best for you!

Open Year-Round (Great for late fall, winter, spring, and early summer proposals):

  • Lake McDonald shoreline: This is probably the most easily accessible spot that still gives sweeping, wide views, with really pretty reflections of the mountain on the lake! This is where Drew proposed, so perfect for a “let’s just stop for a quick picture” cover story as well!

  • Apgar Beach + Dock:  This engagement session is a great example! Also super accessible (just inside the West Entrance of the Park), it’s a magical spot for early morning sunrise sessions too!

  • North Shore / Middle Fork pull-offs: Tucked right against the Flathead River, these are perfect for couples wanting more privacy and that lost-in-nature vibe (without venturing too far).

Open Seasonally (Usually mid-June to early/mid-September):

  • Sun Point / Saint Mary area: Here’s an elopement at Sun Point, so you can see the views! It’s a very popular spot in the summer months, but with plenty of nooks to slip away on your own (all with killer mountain and lake views).

  • Logan Pass overlooks: If you want to propose with that “on top of the world” feeling, Logan Pass is your spot. Also incredible wildflowers and classic Glacier alpine views!

  • Many Glacier region: For the hikers, you’ve probably heard of Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake—this is where you’ll find them!

Before you decide, always check the Going-to-the-Sun Road opening dates for the year you’re visiting! The road closes due to weather in the winter, so spots like Logan Pass and Sun Point aren’t always an option.

And as always, I’m happy to give you more location ideas after you book your proposal photoshoot! Until then, there’s more in this Glacier engagement location blog as well!

Unique Proposal Ideas and Experiences

If you’re hiring me as your proposal photographer, here’s what you need to know first: I’m all about the experience. Will I make sure to capture all the little moments along the way? For sure! But first and foremost, I want you to ENJOY your day! It’s not about the photos. It is about having as much fun as you can!

Here are ideas for personalizing your proposal in Glacier:

  • Invite friends and family to meet you for a celebration dinner! You get a sweet moment to yourselves and then get to be surrounded by the people you love most. My top three food recommendations just outside of the park are:
  • Backslope Brewing (Columbia Falls) - for chill beers and a cozy environment
  • Harbor Grille (Lakeside) with romantic views of Flathead Lake, sunset is stunning!
  • Jalisco’s Cantina (Whitefish) yummy Mexican food and margarita  in a casual environment, right in downtown

  • Go hiking! Okay, so this one is a little obvious. But with over 700 miles of established trails in the Park, I had to mention it! Here are my favorite hikes around (as a life-long Montana local) → Apgar Lookout, Highline Trail to Granite Park Chalet, and Iceberg Lake!

Places to Stay in Glacier National Park

Set the mood for your entire trip by choosing a stay that matches your vibe as a couple! There are all types of accommodations, all well-loved for different reasons. From luxe resorts to tiny little cabins to public campgrounds!

Here are a few fan-favorite options:

  • Under Canvas Glacier (Coram):  Glamping!! Perfect if you and your partner love the outdoorsy vibes of camping, but you want to make this trip a little more luxurious!

  • Airbnbs + VRBOs in West Glacier / Columbia Falls / Coram: There are many gorgeous options, from cabins with hot tubs to trendy A-frames to riverfront spots with private property accesses with your own little slice of the mountains.

  • The Lodge at Whitefish Lake (Whitefish): Want to go all out? This is a luxury lodge atmosphere with lake views, spa treatments, and great restaurants nearby. Proposal-worthy for sure!
