So you got engaged (big congrats!), started looking for a photographer, and now you’re wondering how the heck to plan your engagement photoshoot outfits. Am I close? Trust me, you’re not the only one.

In fact, most of my couples come to me for help when planning what to wear for their engagement photos. And I totally get it! You want to look your best, and I want you to feel your best, especially during this exciting season of life. But the never-ending Pinterest rabbit hole is a scary place to be.

That’s why I’ve put together a guide to help make outfit ideas for engagement photos easier (and maybe even a little fun)! Colors, types of clothes, and style boards by season—I’m walking you through it all.

The Golden Rules for Choosing Engagement Photo Outfits

(No Matter the Season)

Be authentic to your personal style.

I know it's tempting to look for engagement outfit ideas for Montana (especially if you’re traveling in for them) and think you have to go with “western vibes” to match the scenery. You don’t need to buy cowboy boots and flannels you’ll never wear again if they just aren’t your style. (Though, if that’s the vibe you want, go for it!)

My best advice is to wear what represents YOUR relationship. Love hiking? Rock those outdoor brands. More wine-bar than dive-bar? Bring that elevated casual look. The best engagement photoshoot outfits don’t “fit the scene,” they allow you to express your unique style and feel extra comfy in front of the camera!

Coordinate, don’t match.

You don’t need to wear identical colors or outfits. In fact, matching usually looks outdated (we all have seen the white shirts and khaki photos, you know?) Light prints or patterns on one partner paired with solids on another contract well and allow each of you to shine (without making photos too busy). If one partner is in flannel, stripes, or a print, then the other can wear a solid that incorporates a similar color or neutral!

Embrace texture and layers.

Don’t be afraid to mix different fabric textures! This often makes more of a difference in photos than the colors themselves. Try pairing a chunky knit sweater with smooth denim, or a flowy chiffon dress with a light wool shawl.

When it comes to layers, they aren't just practical for Montana weather, but they also give you more variety in your photos. Accessories like scarves, jackets, and jewelry add some visual interest without having to change an entire outfit!

Bring 2-3 outfit options.

My couples often bring multiple options for each person: shifts, pants, bottoms, dresses. When we meet up, I help them coordinate the outfits in real time! Sometimes, it’s as simple as switching out a shirt that makes the outfits photo-ready.

I suggest starting with something casual like your favorite jeans and a top that makes you feel great, then adding a dressier outfit for more formal shots. This gives variety to your gallery and lets you show different sides of your relationship. If it makes it easier, you can think of what you’d wear in different date scenarios: picnic at the park, date night at your favorite restaurant, on a hike with your pup (don’t forget their accessories, bring a bandana for the furbaby, too)!

Comfort is everything.

If you’re tugging at your outfit, adjusting straps, or freezing…it will show. Wear clothes you can move, walk, run and jump into a piggyback, climb up a rock, or even snuggle in. I know it’s tempting to plan engagement outfits simply to look good, but in reality, feeling good is the most important part.

Consider your setting and season.

Are you hiking in Glacier National Park? Sitting on the shore of Flathead Lake? Downtown at a wine bar in Whitefish? Think about the experience you’re creating for your photos and dress in a way that makes sense for that setting. Kitten heels are cute for a night out, but don’t exactly make sense against the backdrop of Big Bend.

The same goes for seasonality! You might have a spaghetti strap, knee-length floral dress in the back of your closet that you’ve been saving for something special, but if you’re booking winter engagement photos, you might be a little cold, you know?

What to Wear for Spring Engagement Photos in Montana (March -May)

Spring in Montana can be beautiful, but it’s usually unpredictable weather-wise. You might get sunshine, snow flurries, or a chilly wind (and sometimes all in one session haha)! Layers will be your best friend, so feel free to have fun with them.

Springs Colors That Compliment the Landscape

Depending on the year and location of your engagement photoshoot, the colors of your surroundings might vary, from woody tones leftover from the bare winter season to fresh greens as new growth from under melting snow to pops of color from flowers in the foothills in late May.

Soft hues and warm tones are perfect for this time of year:

  • Sage Green: Works great with all the new foliage and pine trees you'll be around
  • Dusty Rose: A soft pink that adds warmth to photos without clashing
  • Cream/Ivory: Clean and classic, works everywhere from lakes to meadows
  • Muted Mustard: Subtle pops of color without being too bold or distracting
  • Soft Denim Blue: Especially if you're shooting near water or on overcast days

Danielle and Tyler met up with me for their 10-year anniversary shoot! So not exactly an engagement shoot, but we’re counting it because their outfits are a perfect example of coordinating and semi-causal!

Danielle wore a navy maxidress with lace details and super flowy chiffon, while Tyler wore a white & navy floral printed short-sleeved button down, dark denim, and boat shoes.

Check out her summer engagement dress & his summer casual outfits here!

Alternatively, Savanna and Dylan brought two outfits each: one everyday outfit and the other a bit more elevated!

Savanna wore:

  • A cream, cropped tank top, dark high-waisted jeans, and strappy sandals (barefoot once they jumped into the lake haha!)
  • A short cream wrap dress with boho style, flowy sleeves

Dylan wore:

  • A light blue short-sleeved button-down, jeans, and loafers with a backward baseball cap
  • A light green short-sleeved button-down, dark jeans, and brown leather shoes

What to Wear for Fall Engagement Photos in Montana (Sept - November)

Fall in Montana, to me, is pure magic! Especially when the larches turn golden yellow, and the rest of the trees mix in reds, greens, and oranges. This time of year in the mountains always feels more romantic and extra cozy.

Colors Perfect for Fall Engagement Photos in Montana

Those classic autumn colors might be the easiest to pick out because the scenery essentially chooses for you:

  • Terracotta: That rusty orange-brown that immediately gives fall vibes
  • Olive Green: Works with both evergreens and changing grasses
  • Wine/Merlot: Deep reds that don't get lost in fall leaves
  • Cream/Oatmeal: Breaks up darker colors and keeps things from feeling too heavy
  • Copper/Burnt Sienna: Rich, warm browns that are always safe for fall in the mountains

Fall Engagement Photo Outfit Ideas

Engagement Outfits for Women:

  • Cozy Casual: Skinny jeans + oversized cream sweater + blanket scarf + knee-high boots
  • Fall Romance: Burgundy dress + tan boots + cream shawl  + felt or suede hat

In my opinion, Loren and Ben absolutely crushed the fall vibes on their engagement shoot at their shoot in Glacier National Park, starting at Lake McDonald and heading up the Flathead River.

Loren wore a burgundy button-down, jeans, and brown leather boots, while Ben layered a flannel with a burnt orange vest paired with jeans and brown loafers.

But Savannah and Brandon killed their fall engagement photoshoot outfits, too! The leaves weren’t quite as bright on their day, but the warm light made up for it.

Savannah wore a cream, long-sleeved shirt with a square neck and ribbed texture, jeans, and white sneakers, and then added an orange & cream plaid shacket for a bit of variety!

Brandon wore a classic white t-shirt with a gray quilted jacket, jeans, and white sneakers! Then, when Savannah added her plaid, he switched his jacket into a fuzzy camel pullover!

Winter Outfits for Engagement Photoshoot in Montana (December - March)

As you can imagine, winter engagement photos are often…snowy! So ‘tis the season of layers. But do them right, and I promise you won’t look like a little kid in a giant, bulky coat. Plus, we can thank the snow for being a stunning blank-canvas backdrop for some fun colors.

Colors Perfect for Winter Engagement Photos in Montana

Gemstone hues, deep tones, and winter classics make up most of the best choices:

  • Deep Emerald Green: Shows up beautifully against white snow
  • Charcoal Gray: Better than light gray (that might match the cloudy sky too much)
  • Cream/Winter White: Avoid pure white, especially if it’s snowy
  • Burgundy/Mulberry: Deep berry tones that warm up cold scenes
  • Navy Blue: Always works and really complements icy tones
  • Red: This might be surprising, but winter is actually the time for that bright red dress

Winter Engagement Photo Outfit Ideas

Engagement Outfits for Women:

  • Cozy Glam: Emerald dress + cream coat + tights + tall boots + blanket scarf
  • Winter Casual: Dark jeans + burgundy sweater + puffer vest + snow boots + earmuffs
  • Mountain Chill: Black leggings + oversized cream turtleneck + long camel coat + winter boots
  • Hiker Go-Tos: Navy ski overalls + cream thermal + beanie + hiking boots + mittens

Men’s Engagement Photo Outfits:

  • Winter Classic: Dark jeans + charcoal sweater + black peacoat + leather boots + scarf
  • Outdoorsy Winter: Khakis + flannel shirt + puffer jacket + winter boots + knit hat
  • Sophisticated: Grey wool pants + burgundy sweater + navy overcoat + dress boots
  • Casual Warm: Jeans + thermal henley + shearling jacket + work boots + beanie

Practical Winter Engagement PhotoTips

  • Layer, layer, layer! You can always remove layers between shots.
  • Choose boots you can actually walk in snow with.
  • Bring hand warmers to tuck in pockets.
  • Consider fun accessories like matching scarves or colorful mittens.
  • Pack a thermos of something warm (hot chocolate photos are adorable!)
  • Bring along a wool blanket to snuggle up in, just for fun or if your fingers are about to go numb.

Peter and MJ’s snowy winter engagement session couldn’t have been cuter (or colder, to be honest). December in Glacier National Park is a real treat, but only if you’re dressed for the occasion!

MJ wore a dark gray turtleneck with dark denim, winter duck boots and fun, colorful wool socks! Peter wore a tan corduroy button down, jeans, and work boots. Both of them brought along mittens and gloves  which were super cute winter accessories, but also perfect for their impromptu snowball fight!

And as always, I brought along a fuzzy blanket, and it was the perfect prop.

What NOT to Wear for Engagement Photos

Again, I will never tell you that you CAN’T wear something that makes your heart happy. But there are a few things I notice that others might not, some from a photographer's perspective and some simply for practicality.

  • Matching outfits exactly: Coordinate, don't duplicate
  • Large logos or graphics: They are distracting and pull focus away from what matters (you)
  • Neon colors: In general, they just don’t photograph well on any skin tone.
  • Brand new, unbroken shoes: Comfort matters, trust me on this one!
  • Anything that needs constant adjusting: If it doesn't fit right, choose something else (again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to feel comfortable)

My Biggest Opinion on Engagement Photoshoot Outfit Planning

Even after all of this advice, there’s one last reminder I want to give you.

The best outfits are the ones that make you feel like yourself.

When you're comfortable and confident, that's when you end up with a gallery full of photos you love, ones that feel like they represent you and your partner in an unfiltered way. Your engagement session is about capturing this specific moment in your love story, not about having perfect outfits.

Put thought into what you wear (that's why you're reading this!), but don't stress so much that you forget to enjoy the experience. Some of my favorite photos happen when couples forget about the camera because they're just having fun together, enjoying the experience and the scenery around them!

Looking for a Montana engagement photographer?

Well, lucky me! Because I’d be over the moon to meet up with you somewhere in Northwestern Montana and document this exciting chapter of your life (and who knows, maybe even your wedding or elopement later on, too)!

I'm Jenn, and I've been living in Kalispell for 20+ years and photographing couples in the area since my brother gifted me a camera 9 years ago. I know all the best spots for every season, think stiff and posed photos are the worst, and yes, I’ll absolutely help you finalize those outfit choices if you need a second opinion!

Can't wait to meet you, show you my favorite spots, and create the photos you’ll hang on your wall ‘til you’re 100!
