This ceremony location sits on the west side of Glacier National Park, right along the shoreline of Lake McDonald, and it’s one of my favorite options for couples who want to bring their closest loved ones (or pups) along for their ceremony. It’s small but mighty with lake and mountain views.

Why Choose Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline for Your Glacier Wedding Location?
Fish Creek checks a lot of boxes that couples don’t realize are important until they’re deep into planning. Here’s why I keep recommending it:
- Larger guest count: Permits allow up to 30 people, which is on the larger side for many Glacier National Park wedding locations!
- Right on the water of Lake McDonald: You get those iconic blue and teal hues this lake is known for, with great mountain views from certain angles.
- Dog-friendly: A huge win for couples who want to bring their pup! Also, a rare opportunity, as many areas in Glacier National Park don’t allow them.
- Close to Apgar & West Glacier: When you’re bringing guests, this quickly becomes a huge perk. Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline is only about 10 minutes from the West Glacier entrance and requires no hiking to reach, making it super convenient and easily accessible. Plus, your friends and family can easily entertain themselves while we head off for portraits in other locations after the ceremony!
- Bathrooms and ample parking: Again, if you’re bringing guests along, this is huge! The parking lot does fill quickly in peak months, as this is a popular picnic spot with a campground nearby.
- Seasonal beauty: You don’t need a single piece of decor to make this a stunning ceremony spot, nature has all you need. In late fall, the larch trees turn golden, and it’s an impeccable sight!
The Big Takeaway: It’s one of those spots that shows off with natural beauty without feeling inconvenient for you or your guests (a rare combo in a national park elopement)!
Looking for something similar on the east side of the park? The Rising Sun Picnic Area Shoreline has similar vibes to Fish Creek. Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline Ceremony Rules & Permit Details
There are some rules you’ll need to know (you’re eloping in a national park, after all).
According to the National Park Service:
- Maximum participants: 30
- Dates available: Late April – Late December
- Pets allowed: Yes
- Chairs: Up to 4 chairs allowed on durable surfaces
- Decor: No tables or décor
- Snacks: Allowed
- Water levels: When water is high, ceremonies must take place below the high-water line on durable, vegetation-free surfaces
Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline works best for simple, intimate ceremonies. It’s perfect for exchanging vows with minimal setup, letting the scenery do the heavy lifting.

Best Time of Year to Get Married at Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline
When to get married in Glacier National Park is a bit of a complicated question because it really depends on what you want. (I know, sorry for that!) Winter can be like walking through a snow globe (a very cold one), fall colors are magic, and summer brings loads of its own pros and cons.
Plus, parts of the park close down in the off-season (Fish Creek included), so the factors really are endless. BUT for this specific location, I believe there really are such things as “the best months to elope in Glacier!”
My Recommendations as a Montana Elopement Photographer
April & May: Great for larger guest counts (20–30 people) before peak summer crowds and before high water levels limit shoreline space.
Late fall (October–November): Absolutely stunning if you’re okay with cooler temperatures. Water levels are lower around this time, and the larch trees give amazing fall colors!
Summer is beautiful too, but keep in mind it’s Glacier’s busiest season. This spot is near a popular campground and picnic area, so the summer months will be busy. If you’re not so keen on curious onlookers, go for shoulder season!
Planning a larger Glacier wedding (40–100 guests) or want more privacy tucked into the trees? Avalanche Amphitheater might be a better fit. It’s a totally different feel than Fish Creek, but it’s right up the road in West Glacier.

Where to Take Photos Before & After Your Ceremony
Your ceremony permit location does NOT limit where you can take portraits. You’re allowed to take photos anywhere the general public is allowed to go in Glacier National Park!

A Real Elopement at Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline
Jessica and Michael’s elopement is such a perfect example of why Fish Creek works so well for guest-friendly Glacier weddings.
They got ready at an Airbnb in Whitefish, Montana, before heading into the park. They met their family at Fish Creek Picnic Area Shoreline for their ceremony right along the water.
After exchanging vows, they stayed put for family portraits along the shoreline, then cut cake and spent time together at the nearby picnic area (which already has tables and space for guests to hang out without needing any extra setup).
Once their family headed back toward West Glacier, we continued on for portraits, with stops at:

It was the perfect balance of meaningful time with loved ones and quiet moments just for the two of them, a great way to get both adventure elopement vibes and those classic family photos!

Because Fish Creek is near the West Entrance, you have tons of great lodging options nearby. I usually recommend:
- Whitefish, MT – Plenty of shops, restaurants, and nightlife (plus, it’s my home!!)
