How to Choose Your Glacier Wedding Date: Is Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter best for you?
I’ve seen you all on Reddit and Facebook asking, “When is the best time to get married in Glacier National Park? “ And as a Glacier elopement photographer, I see some advice I love and some that makes me want to toss my phone into Lake McDonald.
So rather than taking to the discussion boards, I figured I'd put together something a little more helpful: a complete guide to choosing the best season for your Glacier wedding or elopement.
We'll cover:
- Pros and cons of each season
- Local insight on weather, crowds, scenery, accessibility, wildlife, and more
- Best GNP wedding locations for each season
- Logistics to think about, no matter the season
Spoiler Alert: I don't believe there's one singular best time to elope in Glacier. There are four very distinct seasons, each with its own beauty, challenges, and personality. The best season for YOU (and your elopement) isn't necessarily what others will say is the best season to visit Glacier.
It’s all about thinking about the experience you want to have.
What Actually Determines the Best Time to Elope in Glacier?
One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give any couple is this:
Talk to a local photographer before choosing your date.
Not because I'm trying to sell you on hiring one (although I do think we're pretty great), but because the logistics of a Glacier elopement can change dramatically depending on the season.
Things like:
- Your guest count
- The locations you're considering
- Your tolerance for weather (heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Your comfort level outdoors
- Whether crowds bother you
- Photo locations and points of interest
- The activities you want to include
- What you want to wear
- The overall vibe you're hoping for
All of those factors matter. If your dream wedding outfit includes velvet sleeves, a wool suit, and cozy layers, July probably isn't your season! And beyond logistics, there's also the visual side of things. Every season creates a completely different backdrop for your photos and a completely different feeling on your wedding day.
As much as I can explain the seasons in this guide, these recommendations are still fairly generalized. The real magic happens once I get to know you, hear about your vision, and understand what actually matters most to you.
That's when I can start recommending specific months, locations, timelines, activities, and all the little details that turn a beautiful wedding or elopement into YOUR wedding or elopement. So if you're already narrowing down dates and want some personalized guidance, I'd love to help.

Spring Elopements in Glacier National Park: Mid April → Mid June
Spring is Glacier's most underrated season. While most people write it off because Going-to-the-Sun Road isn't fully open yet and the weather can get a little wild, spring gives you a chance to roam freely from crowds without freezing temps.

Spring Elopement Highlights:
- Wildlife sightings galore

Spring Planning Challenges:

Best Month to Get Married in Spring: May
May gives you the best balance of accessibility, wildlife, greenery, and manageable weather without summer crowds.
Best Glacier Wedding Location for Spring: 7 Mile Pullout
High water levels rarely impact the shoreline here, making it one of the most reliable lake locations during spring.

My Extremely Biased Awards for Best Times to Elope in Glacier
Before I dish out my personal recommendations, here’s what I want you to know about me (both as a person and as a Glacier Elopement Photographer).
I got married in a backyard ceremony. My dogs were there. We made paper flowers. We followed it up with a honeymoon that involved visiting nine national parks. And that was before I became a wedding and elopement photographer. But that experience taught me something really important early on:
The best wedding day isn't about choosing the objectively "best" location, season, or backdrop. It’s the experience of your day that matters most.
I want you to have photos you LOVE and obsess over. Ones you hang from your walls and send to loved ones on holiday postcards. But you want to know how you get those? Plan a day that feels like it matches who you are as a couple. And then LIVE. IT. UP.
That's it.
The couples whose galleries make me emotional aren't necessarily the ones who chose the "perfect" season. They're the ones who fully embraced whatever season they chose. The ones who jumped into the lake even though it was too cold. The ones who laughed when a rainshower left them soaked. The ones who said let’s improvise after seeing the crowds at their “must have” spot.
The best photos aren’t usually perfectly planned. They just happen when you stick to what makes YOU feel good throughout your day.
So while I can absolutely tell you my personal favorites, remember that photography is subjective. What feels magical to me might not be what feels magical to you. That said...
Here are my completely biased opinions (after living in NW Montana for 20 years and photographing elopements in Glacier for 7+):
Best Season Overall: Fall
I don’t love sweating (especially in wedding attire), and I am a cozy, sweater-weather type of girl. Give me leaves crunching under my feet and a golden hour glow for sunset photos in fall and I am HAPPY.
Best Season for First-Time Glacier Visitors: Later Summer (September)
If it’s your first time here and you’re traveling from out of state for your elopement, September is a local’s top recommendation for the peak Glacier experience.
Best Season for a Full Wedding Weekend: Summer
Long days give you almost an insane amount of time to bop around for adventure activities: hiking, boat tours, cute dinners in town, driving West to East on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Plan day-after photos in the park to make your wedding day more chill!
Best Season for Introverts: Winter
In summer and fall, you’ll likely have tourists around during your photos or ceremony. If more privacy makes you more comfortable (and you like snow), winter is best!
Best Season for BIG Mountain Photos: Summer
If places like Sun Point, Big Bend, and Logan Pass are on your wishlist, summer really is the only option. My advice, though? Opt for a quieter wedding ceremony location and then head to these spots for photos. They are BUSY!
Best Season for Last-Minute Planners: Spring
If you're trying to book lodging, vendors, and activities closer to your wedding date, spring gives you way more options than other seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions for Glacier Weddings & Elopements
When does the Going-to-the-Sun Road open?
The Going-to-the-Sun Road typically opens sometime between mid-June and early July and closes in mid-October, depending on snowfall and plowing conditions.
Do I need a permit to get married in Glacier year-round?
Yes. All weddings and elopements inside Glacier National Park require a Special Use Permit. The permit currently costs $125 and should be submitted at least 30 days before your wedding date, although I strongly recommend applying much earlier.
→ How to Get a Wedding Permit for Glacier National Park
How much does it cost to get married in Glacier Park?
The Special Use Permit ($125) and the Park Entrance Fee are the only universal costs of eloping in Glacier. But the total cost varies based on: accommodations, florals, food, guest count, photography, videography, wedding attire. Basically, elopements can have all of the bells and whistles of a traditional wedding, if you want! Generally, couples pick and choose their priorities for their budget.
→ I do a full breakdown here (with an estimated cost of $13K on average): How Much Does It Really Cost to Elope in Montana?
Does Glacier National Park allow guests at ceremonies?
Yes, but guest limits vary by ceremony location. Some locations allow as few as 10 guests, while others allow up to 100+. The GNP National Park Service breakdown outlines guest counts here: Glacier National Park Wedding Locations & Rules
What days are best for getting married in Glacier?
If you have flexibility, I almost always recommend Monday through Thursday, especially during the peak summer season. Weekdays generally mean fewer tourists, easier parking, and a less hectic experience overall.
What time of day is best for a Glacier Wedding?
In most cases, sunrise and sunset offer the best light and the fewest crowds. As a general rule:
- Summer: Sunrise around 5:30–6:00 AM | Sunset around 9:30–9:45 PM
- Fall: Sunrise around 7:00–8:00 AM | Sunset around 6:00–8:00 PM
- Winter: Sunrise around 8:00 AM | Sunset around 4:30–5:00 PM
- Spring: Varies widely depending on the month
One thing to keep in mind: Glacier is a mountain environment. Depending on your location, you may lose sunlight earlier than the official sunset time or gain it later in the morning. That's why I always build timelines around the specific location and lighting conditions!

Want a peek into what it feels like to work together? Here’s what Rebecca + Garrett had to say:
“Where do I even begin to explain how effortless and amazing our experience was with Jenn… from start to finish. She was always in touch with us with our wedding planning, she made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera (my husband and I are the awkward couple who doesn’t know what to do or where to put our hands so she guided us into the most natural poses) had us laughing the whole day, and to top it off her turn around time for pictures is unreal…
We literally had pictures the very next day that we could share with our friends and family and of course when I seen them my mouth nearly fell to the floor because I could hardly believe how beautiful they turned out. Jenn will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart and I am so glad I made a new friend along the way. If you want your wedding day to be perfect, I highly recommend.”
